She is an award-winning actress and theatremaker, and for many, a mentor in the TV, film, and theatre industry. Now, Lee-Ann van Rooi can also add talk show host to her impressive CV.

In Waar daar ’n wil is, Lee-Ann will have in-depth conversations with celebrities, ranging from figures in the entertainment world to politicians, activists, and trailblazers. Each guest will share how they found their way to where they are today. The show will highlight individuals who have proven that where there’s a will, there is a way.

“Honest conversations with South Africans who have truly made a difference and represent the core of what makes us who we are,” says Lee-Ann about what viewers can expect from the show. “Our guests have three things in common: they are diverse, they have made a difference, and they are willing to work alongside people they may disagree with, but with whom they can still help make the world a better place.”

She says a comfortable environment was created where guests could feel free to share their stories. “Our guests come from different backgrounds, but we feel ready to celebrate those differences now. It’s our differences that make us so strong as a nation. Ricardo Arendse and Francois Nolte wrote the scripts, but in the end, I also had to listen and share what was in my own heart. I hope everyone will enjoy the show because this is a first in my career, and I’m very nervous about it.”

In each 30-minute episode, an insert highlights other aspects and people in the guest’s life.

Some of the notable guests Lee-Ann will engage with include former cricketer Fanie de Villiers, women’s rights activist Lucinda Evans, singer and songwriter Francois van Coke, the new Miss South Africa Mia le Roux, and former Springbok and deputy mayor of Cape Town Eddie Andrews.

Lee-Ann says preparing for ‘Waar daar ’n wil is’ was very different from preparing for a role.

“It’s a new genre for me, and learning new skills at this stage of my career is an honour. I often hide behind a character and storyline. Here, I was asked to reveal a bit of myself as well. It’s a big challenge for me to step out of my comfort zone, but if it doesn’t scare you, it won’t grow you!”

Waar daar ’n wil is begins on 4 October at 18:30 on kykNET (DStv channel 144). It will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
